THE CRAFT BEER SCENE IN CINCINNATI

Cincinnati’s love affair with beer dates back to the 19th century when the city became a booming hub of German immigrants who brought with them a rich brewing tradition. Nestled along the banks of the Ohio River, Cincinnati quickly rose to fame as one of America’s top beer producers with more than thirty six breweries dotting the cityscape by the mid-1800s. These breweries are not just businesses but a way of life deeply ingrained in the city’s culture.

The trendy neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine was once the heart of the brewing empire. The tunnels and lagering cellars beneath its streets are remnants of a time when Cincinnati was known as the “Beer Capital of the World.” The legacy that was built by the German brewers who crafted lagers that flowed freely in beer gardens and saloons throughout the city is still a glorious memory of early brewing of Cincinnati before Prohibition put a cork in the city’s thriving beer culture.

Craft breweries are slowly gaining steam with their innovative approach to beer and their ability to use different methods of brewing with unusual ingredients that produce unique flavor like the use of varied tropical fruits and other ingredients like cookies in Little Miami’s Earth Cookie brown ale that has notes of chocolate and coffee. Visiting and exploring local breweries also means supporting regional roots and mingling in the age-old heritage of Cincinnati’s beer culture.
